Sequim Summer Spectacular 2020

Doug and I are very much looking forward to hosting the next family reunion June 18-20.  To help you plan your trip, I’ve put together some notes.  I’m posting it on the blog so whether you’re an early planner or a last minute planner, the information is right at your fingertips.

I’ve tried to make this as clear and concise as possible, but am happy to answer any questions you may have.

Travel
You may want to access this map as you plan your travel route.  It shows Seattle and the surrounding areas - including all the ferry crossings, their schedules and fees.
WA State Ferries Route Map

Folks traveling from Phoenix, SFO, Denver or LAX can fly into either SeaTac or Everett (Paine Field).  Everett is a much smaller airport, so flights are limited, but it would certainly be less hectic than SeaTac.

From SeaTac:
We are about 2 hours from SeaTac, assuming you don’t arrive during rush hour.  There are several routes to get here from there.

For those planning to rent a car:

1. The most direct is probably driving south through Tacoma before heading northwest to Sequim.  There are no ferry crossings.
2. Drive to the downtown ferry and take the ferry to Bainbridge Island
3. Drive to the downtown ferry and take the ferry to Bremerton (not the most efficient...if you're at the downtown terminal, it makes more sense to go to Bainbridge Island)
(Note: the downtown ferry terminal is in the midst of being rebuilt, so it'll be a bit of a zoo if you choose to go there.)
4. Drive north to Edmonds and take the ferry to Kingston (highly recommended for the best views of the Olympics and lovely drive through Port Gamble)

The downtown ferry is near Mariners’ stadium, in case attending a Mariners game is part of your travel plan. Looks like the Mariners are at home 6/16-24.

If you are not planning to rent a car:

1. There is a door-to-door shuttle from SeaTac that costs about $60/person one way.  It’s super easy, but only does a few runs/day and you need to make your reservations at least a week in advance.  Rocket Shuttle.
2. There is a shuttle that will take you as far as Poulsbo, which is about 50 minutes from our house.  You cannot make reservations from the Seattle Airport, but it runs hourly, so there is more flexibility with your flight times.  Be forewarned that it may make several stops before you get to Poulsbo.  We are happy to pick folks up in Poulsbo if that schedule works best for you.  Cost is about $30/person one way. Kitsap Airporter
3. You can take the train from SeaTac to downtown (Pioneer Plaza or University Street), and then make your way to the downtown ferry terminal or you can get a ride service to take you to the downtown ferry – it's a little over a half-mile.  You can take the walk-on ferry to Kingston which is run by Kitsap county and we would pick you up in Kingston  https://www.kitsaptransit.com/service/fast-ferry. The downtown area is a bit sketchy so I don’t recommend walking through it with luggage.

FromPaine Field in Everett:
1. If you plan to rent a car, you would drive to the ferry terminal at Edmonds – which is approximately 10 miles – and take the ferry to Kingston.
2. If you don’t want to rent a car, you could get a ride service to the Edmonds Ferry terminal and we can pick you up in Kingston – which is about 45 minutes from our house.

When considering return flights to either airport, we strongly suggest that you do not plan to leave from Sequim to catch an early morning flight.  The traffic in Seattle is legendary and road work or an accident could cause you to miss your plane.

Lodging

Summer is a busy time in Sequim, so we recommend that you make accommodation reservations early.  We do have one guest room in our house.  It’s available to whomever requests it first.  It’s a queen sized Murphy bed with a brand new and comfortable mattress.

Camping
If you have a camper or travel trailer, we do have a parking spot with power.  Depending on the size of your rig, we might be able to get two vehicles in there, but it would be tight.  You are also welcome to sleep on a lounge outside.  The nights are mild and the stars are spectacular.  We even have a bathroom directly accessible from the backyard. Of course there is always the chance of rain…

There are two campgrounds that are relatively close.  Sequim Bay State Park is less than a mile from our house.  It’s a nice campground, but it is very close to HWY 101, so would likely be a bit noisy.  Reservations are strongly recommended.  Sequim Bay State Park

Dungeness  County Park is about 10 miles from our house.  Located on the Dungeness Spit, it would have no traffic noise.   Again, reservations are recommended . Dungeness County Park

Both campgrounds have gates that prevent you from getting in after dusk/10p.m.  This could be an issue if you’re in the middle of a good discussion or a hot card game.  Remember, it doesn’t get dark here until after 10 p.m. in June

Hotels
There is a nice Holiday Inn Express that is within 4 miles.  Breakfast is included and they have a nice rooftop deck and a Tesla charging station.  The Red Lion is about 5 miles away.

There are several other hotels in town, but they are a little further away from us.   We do NOT recommend the Sequim Bay Inn.  It’s close and inexpensive, but it’s pretty dumpy. (Or was when we stayed there a couple of years ago.)

VRBO
There are lots of VRBO and Air BNBs in town.  I found a number of VRBO that are within just a few miles of our house.

This one is super close to our house
4 bed/3 bath

We’ve stayed in this one  about 2 miles up the road which is very comfy.
2 bed/1 bath

These two are on Sequim bay and would be close to each other:

2 bed/1.5 bath

2 bed/1 bath

These two are next to each other:

3 bed/2 ba

studio

This one is near the Marina – a little further away than the others.
3 bed/2 bath

For the couple looking for a romantic getaway.

If you want to consider a different place, send us the link and we can do a drive-by.

ACTIVITIES

There are lots of things to do in this area if you have a little extra time before or after the reunion.

Seattle – the Mariners, Pikes Market, the Space Needle….Seattle is a cool city with lots of things to see and do.

Port Townsend is a cute and artsy Victorian town that is about 30 miles from us. Fort Worden, an old army base, is there and also the Marine Science Center which has a cool aquarium.    There is a campground and vacation rentals.  There is also a  ferry connection from Port Townsend to Coupeville on Whidbey island.

Whidbey Island is quite the tourist place and there is a great bluff hike in Coupeville.  You can also drive from Coupeville to Anacortes  (or vice/versa).  You can access all the San Juan islands from Anacortes.  Reservations are required for the ferry ride between Coupeville and Port Townsend during the summer and probably from Anacortes to the San Juans.  You can also reach Whidbey from Mulkiteo.

Marrowstone Island is about 45 minutes from us – accessible by bridge – no ferry required.  It is also close to Port Townsend.  Fort Flagler an old army base that is now a state park- sits at the tip of the island.  It’s a cool place with great history and great views.  There is a campground there or you can reserve one of the old officer houses.  We’ve stayed in one of the old officer residences and it was very nice.

Olympic National Park can be accessed in several areas near to us and it extends to the rain forest on the western coast.  You can day hike, backpack, climb, etc.  You may want to travel all the way to Neah Bay just to say you’ve been to the westernmost point in the contiguous U.S.

The Canadian city of Victoria is on Vancouver Island and is accessible by ferry from  Port Angeles.  Package deals are available through the ferry site.  We are about 30 minutes from Port Angeles, so you could make a stop in Victoria on either end of your trip.  Be sure to bring your passport.

I know this is a lot of information, but I hope it helps with your trip planning.  Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.  So excited to see everyone!

Sequim 2020

Belatedly, thanks to Molly and Sande for a great birthday bash.  A great time was had by all!

We’re hoping that you all will be able to join us next summer in Sequim.  We have some fun things planned – including an amazing race – but also lots of time to just hang out and visit.

We want to get together before J starts her residency in July.  After consulting with some folks during the bash, we are currently looking at Thursday May 28- Saturday May 30th.  Our hope would be that everyone could arrive sometime on Weds the 27th.  Memorial Day is May 25th which might be good for folks who want to do a little sight-seeing or visit other friends/relatives before the reunion.  I would strongly encourage you to take some extra time at one end of the reunion or the other as there is so much close by to do and explore.

Our second choice is June 18-20.  Please let me know as soon as possible whether or not either the May dates and/or the June dates will work for you. You can either comment on this post or send me a text or email.

Once we have the dates firmed up, we’ll post information on places to stay and things to do in the area.  As this is a tourist area, summers are busy so you will want to make your plans early.  We are so excited to have you all here and share this special place with you.

As of now, we have not heard that anyone is coming for Thanksgiving.  The invitation is still open, but we certainly understand that it’s a difficult and expensive time to travel – and that two trips to Sequim in the same year may not be within your budget.

Love to all

Sande’s words...

All,
It is with a great sense of unease and urgency that I write to inform you, that I have strong reasons to believe that Brian is trying to kill me.

As you may or may not know, I am scheduled to take my bi-annual masochistic trip to Mt. Whitney to humiliate and denigrate myself before the mountain.  Brian, upon learning about this pilgrimage offered to accompany me out of what I initially took to be a genuine sense of care and concern.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to train/run for the past several weeks, although I am now cleared to take long walks.  Hearing I was released for hiking, Brian offered to “help” by inviting me to take a few hikes with him before the upcoming climb.

Well we completed our first two days of hiking yesterday and it is from this experience that I must now conclude his motives are at best, suspect. Forcing the elderly up and down loose gravel slopes might be written off as simply bad judgment, but one cannnot so easily explain away a threat of physical vilolence. Although, even this threat could be overlooked, especially as it was a result of the insulting act, by me, of offering to pay for something. When isn’t kindness and generosity usually greeted with a show of force?

However, as much as I can try to excuse the above, it is beyond suspicion that on more than one occasion I spotted a camera crew with none other than...Keith Morrison

Sequim Visit

Hello family!

We took a trip up to see Sue and Doug last week. Even though we two ended up not feeling our best that week, our hosts were fantastic!

Sue and Doug's house is in the most beautiful setting! Their hard work on the landscaping is very evident. We spent the majority of our time just taking in the ever changing amazing view from their living room, their dining room, their deck...you get the gist! The meals at the Lambeth B&B were fantastic, both Sue and Doug are great at whipping up a tasty dish. We can't wait to go back and take the excursion they had planned for us (ferry to Canada for the day), and do more sight seeing. We are looking forward to the reunion there next year when you all can experience their joy. Sue and Doug, we congratulate you on making your dream come true!

Molly upcoming schedule

Hi all!
Just a quick update - nothing impt. I just wanted to make sure I knew how to do this in case something important happens.
I have lots of work lately. See photo - May is a typical month for me. Yes, I still use a paper calendar and a pink marker to circle the dates I work...
And not very circular I’m noticing.   Now it’s August and September...

Somehow, it turned into a full time job.  With that said, Mark has been coming to work with me every Thursday. Although backtiming isn’t an exciting job, (it’s actually more if a task) it’s still exciting to be in the control room for show. He’s going to time next Thurs. show on his own.

Been at the beach off and on and am working on 1/8 of the 32000 piece puzzle. It’s a chore.  Can’t wait for some help.

Maybe when you come for the BASH in October. Maybe we could finish panel 1???

Sande is headed to NY tomorrow for a few days...we are well (considering our age) and happy.

xoxo

PS if this makes it to the blog, I will only have to learn one more thing about blogging...how to post pictures in the correct orientation.

DiNolfis do Italy

Hello Family and Greetings from Italy!

We are having so much fun and just finished our 3rd day.

Day 1 was obviously a travel day and although we did not arrive to our Airbnb until about 10 PM, we decided to grab an authentic pasta and wine dinner. (When in Rome...!). J further suggested we may want to try and eat gelato every day we're in Italy, so luckily we found one open past midnight. (picture 1 below)

Day 2 consisted of a great lunch learning fun Italian phrases from our waiter .  We are really trying to educate ourselves in the language/culture and Nani has taken a commanding lead!  We then walked to Trevi Fountain and strolled  around the ruins near the Forum including the Colosseum and a  couple of  churches. (pictures 2 and 3 below) I personally was awestruck  by the beautiful architecture. The weather was very hot and humid for these dry heat Arizonans, so we spent some of the late afternoon in a wonderful café and  waited  for it to cool off a bit. We ate our gelato on our 1.5 mile walk back to our place.  After a rest and maybe another glass of wine, 😉 we walked to another restaurant and had another late pasta dinner and some great tiramisu and cheesecake for dessert.

Today, we checked out of our Airbnb and took a train to Florence.  Our first stop was lunch in  hotel overlooking the city.  (picture 4-not pictured, J and our beautiful view 😊). We then checked into a 3 bedroom apartment near the Santa Maria Novella Square. We all took a much needed rest and afterwards walked downtown along the Arno river. We got some gelato and headed back.  This brings me to present moment as we sit here reliving the day and sharing our pictures.

We are enjoying our family time together as we always do.

Hope the rest of you are well and happy.
More later,
Kathleen

Fischjcik Update

Quick Update from Colorado:

1. I'm back at work! I'm teaching 4 sections of Integrated Math 1 and 1 section of Integrated Math 2 this school year at a public HS near us. The state of Colorado is suspicious of my teaching history so I also have to take some classes to get my teaching license, but everything is in order for that (it's been a process). I started last Monday with New Teacher Training all week with all the other new teachers to my school and a couple feeder middle schools. This week all teachers are back Wednesday. Students start on August 15. The school is about 15 min from our house, but starts early! I have to be there at 7 AM.

2. Jim is still enjoying his job, and asked his boss not to travel for the month of August so that we can all get used to our new schedules. We spent a week with his parents and aunt in Breckenridge in July so he actually got some vacation days in. Pics on his smugmug site! He is officially a Coloradan now after hiking and summiting a 14er (Mt. Quandary) while we were there.

3. Cooper is on the move. He can crawl and is extremely interested in how doors work and touching Max's bones, and generally curious about anything on the floor that isn't one of his toys. He is really good at picking up Max's hair with the front of his clothes, we're working on a Swiffer Onesie prototype so he can actually help clean up (Tom let us know if you can help with design).  Coop started daycare at a center in our neighborhood when I went back to work last week and seems to be doing well with that.

4. Max is a good boy- confused by all these changes but rolling with them all. He also made it to the top of Mt Quandary

Hummingbird

Hey family,

I wanted to share some very exciting news...

As I think everyone knows, Brian and I met on a show site, in Atlanta, six years ago last month. We loved working with each other so much we decided to GET MARRIED...

...well. That. And we later decided to start a business together. After working side by side for the past six years, we began to recognize a series of issues in the backstage/live event world. They're issues that are more or less factored in to the set-up process but, they cost us, the producers and the end-clients time and money, over and over again.

Being lovers of beautiful design and pointed efficiency, we began this year by sitting down together and making a list of ways we figured we could do things differently. That resulted in designing two road cases that we were sure would flip the live event video department on its head.

To get started, we needed the space to build these cases... hence the warehouse (which some of you have seen).  We received our keys on February 1, just minutes after filing our articles of incorporation with the state. For those of you that haven't seen the warehouse, it's a beautiful, historic building located about a mile west of our condo. It used to be the Arizona National Guard building and our portion is the old weapons storage facility (read: double brick walls and the original vault door). The space is way bigger than we initially needed but we grew increasingly excited about the potential the extra space offered any other crazy ideas we're sure to come up with.

Once we moved in, Brian took our sketches and turned them into cut sheets. He turned those cut sheets into a jigsaw puzzle's worth of wood, aluminum and laminate and turned those pieces into our final product.

In the meantime, I worked on our branding and we both learned how to launch a business the right way. Yes, we've both been freelancers for many years but we agreed we needed to approach this adventure differently. Meeting with a local business advisor ended up being so helpful.

Today, exactly six months after we got our keys, we officially launched our business. Our website is live, as well as our Instagram and Facebook pages. Feel free to check them out!

We have five shows with these cases lined up (but not quite confirmed) between September and January, but are first going to enjoy some much-needed downtime abroad, with the rest of the Di Nolfi crew.

We leave August 5 and will gallivant through Rome, Florence, Milan, Edinburgh, Islay and Glasgow before returning home August 17.

Thank you all for your support and votes of confidence over these past several months. Having a solid foundation from which to build this was imperative and we're very grateful.

LOVE YOU ALL!
-A+B

A way to keep in touch

Welcome to the Fischer Family Happenings blog.  I'm hoping this blog will allow us to keep up better with each other and share photos of trips and kid pics, schedules, and any random thoughts you'd like to share.  Would love to hear about Brian's trips to Alaska and India, updates on Steve and Laurel's business, Jocee's rotations, the DiNolfi’s Europe trip and please post kid pics (they grow so fast!)

For my first post, I'd like to share some things the Lambeths have planned.

Late August - Carol and Tom are coming to Sequim to visit!  Exact dates still pending.

October in Cambria.  We will be attending the birthday bash and decided to extend our time at the beach.  We arrive on the 16th and leave on the 23rd.

Thanksgiving - Everyone and anyone is welcome to join us for Thanksgiving - however, as this is a busy and expensive time of year to travel - and you have other families to consider, we fully understand that most of you probably will not opt to join us - but the invitation is open and Doug will barbecue a turkey.  Vegetarian options will also be available.

January in Hawaii.  We will leave Seattle for Maui on January 1 and return on January 9th.  For part of the time we are there we will be attending the Kapalua PGA tournament.  Anyone who would like to join us is welcome.  We have reserved a 1 bedroom VRBO, but if someone wants to share a bigger place, we can cancel before November 1.

Summer 2020 - Fischer Family reunion in Sequim.  This has been in the planning for 5 years, so I hope everyone will be able to come.  By holding it in the summer, our thought is that you could potentially build a larger vacation around the reunion.  I know several of you have relatives in Seattle, Olympic National Park is practically in our backyard, and Victoria BC is a short ferry ride away.  Lots of things to do in this area if you have the time.  We have an exciting amazing race planned and other fun activities.  At this time it looks like the best time would be in June as Jocelyn will likely start her residency in July.  If you have preferred dates in June or dates you would like us to avoid, please let us know soon.

Looking forward to seeing your posts!
